I would include Leatherface and make it the Big 4. Anybody who thinks Ghostface or Chucky is the fourth is WRONG.

The only modern slasher who even comes close is Art the Clown.

They definitely still are. Ghostface and Chucky are also big. Art the Clown is the only new one that comes to mind that actually has some cultural cache.

I disagree, and I think the reason Leatherface doesn't quite have the same cultural footprint is because he does not have a consistent appearance. Michael, Freddy, Jason, Chucky, Ghostface, and even Art the Clown all have an iconic, immediately recognizable visage, but Leatherface's skin mask varies from movie to movie. He's a horror icon, but not quite on the same "everyone wears the Halloween costume" level.

Ghostface is a very fun character, but is usually doing so many prat falls that it's hard to take them seriously. Kinda reminds me of Freddy when Nancy brings him into the real world - falling all over the place and getting his ass kicked.

Art is genuinely creepy as hell. That first movie leans a little too much into torture porn for me to love it, but as a character he's fantastic.

1 is just okay, Leone hadn't quite nailed the character or concept yet. But I unabashedly adore 2 and 3. Two of my favorite horror movies ever already.

If I were doing a mount Rushmore I'd probably go with Chucky as my fourth. Iconic look, great performance from Brad Dourif and he's got a unique angle like Freddy.

Chucky is definitely there too.

The question was specifically slashers, not horror villains in general, so Pinhead definitely doesn't count.

I've only seen the first movie, but is Leatherface really a slasher? That feels more like a "hills have eyes" situation.

TCM is a proto-slasher, I think close enough

I’ve never grouped Leatherface with the slasher villains because he’s just one of a group of antagonists, even if he is the one doing all the killing in the movie. You wonder if he’d be doing it all without the cook and hitchhiker/choptop around. I guess you could say the same about MM in the Halloween 6 producer cut, but I prefer to pretend that doesn’t exist.
