Artists and their "signature songs"

For the last few months I've become obsessed with the idea of "signature songs" -- the one song that defines an artist to the world. So much so that I've started a podcast about it with my longtime friend Lane, where we dissect the career of different artists to figure out which is their signature song.
So I decided to start this thread to:
1- Promote my fledgling little podcast, which you should listen to because it's good. (Find us on
Spotify,
Apple Podcasts, or listen online on
our website))
2- Get your feedback/opinions on various artists to use as a reference point when weighing the contenders before we record each ep.
3- Get your suggestions for artists that you'd be interested in hearing an episode about!

Our latest episode was on
Stevie Wonder. A crazy career with a whole bunch of potential contenders.
Our next episode, which we will record next week, will be about
CREED. So I ask you, RM, what song do you immediately think of when you think... "Creed"?

It's definitely "Higher".
Didn't you already start this thread a while ago?

I started a thread about Pearl Jam specifically, this is broader for other artists
I thought "Higher" too but the amount of people who have responded "One Last Breath" is surprising me

OLB also an acceptable answer, but "Higher" was the song that made them huge

It seems like "With Arms Wide Open" was bigger in Latin America than "Higher" which is interesting

Where did you land on Stevie? I was thinking Superstition or Isn’t She Lovely.

For Stevie we discussed six contenders:
"For Once in My Life"
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)"
"Superstition"
"Isn't She Lovely"
"Sir Duke"
"I Just Called to Say I Love You"
with honorable mentions to "Happy Birthday", "Part Time Lover" and a bunch of others.
Ultimately my co-host and I disagreed on the final pick, with him picking "Superstition" and me picking "Sir Duke".

I also remember ¨What If¨ being played a lot here. I think it was also released on the Scream 2 soundtrack, which i actually thought about getting it.
Im very lucky i dont actually own something with Creed. Imagine that embarrassment.

I remember poking fun at the only friend that was a Creed fan.
But we all had a turn at the CD player, and I remember "My Sacrifice" being the one Creed song that I didn't mind.

"Sir Duke" is probably my fav. tho. That, or "Isn't She Lovely".

"You Haven't Done Nothin" is my fav but not popular enough to consider. "Superstition" is a good pick

I went into it a bit more in the episode (listen to it!) but basically I think "Superstition" is a great pick, but the conversation around Stevie and his overall perception as an artist has shifted somewhat and I think "Sir Duke" captures what he's all about a little better. While still being a massively successful smash hit.
I was surprised to learn that "Isn't She Lovely" wasn't even released as a single in the states. A lot of the people I polled said that was the first Stevie Wonder song they could think of.
Also: "I Just Called to Say I Love You" is a horrific song

I maintain that the guitar part for "My Sacrifice" is actually very nice.
The contenders we're considering for Creed so far are:
"My Own Prison"
"One"
"Higher"
"With Arms Wide Open"
"My Sacrifice"
"One Last Breath"
(truthfully the real question is gonna be between "Higher", "With Arms Wide Open" and "One Last Breath" -- but we always do six contenders so we're locked in the format. It's fine; it'll give me the opportunity to talk about "One"'s hilarious anti-affirmative-action lyrics)
