Ooofff. Two five star classics. Unimpeachable studio or live. But Jeremy is the live song I most look forward to hearing, and it deserves a MM win. Gets my vote.

Jeremy is overrated on RM.

Brutal choice. Probably my favorite 2 on the record.

Release.

Release certainly has its place - I think of it as the traditional set opener at the live shows - but I never want to listen to the studio version.

Easy vote for Jeremy.

I’ve probably spent too much energy in my youth raging against those songs that made Pearl Jam huge commercially - and the video for Jeremy was a tipping point for that. I ran against the grain on it for years, nearly celebrating when they finally stopped playing the song at every show. There are certain naive takes of my younger days and this one of them. I slowly, as the pressure sort of faded on this song, realized just how good it was and is now amongst the favorites. It’s been a journey.

However, few songs in this world speak to me like Release. I can remember hearing it in moments where it came into focus and just overwhelmed me. It still does from time to time, and gets my vote here, but either of these being gone after round 1 is criminal.

Just watch the Jeremy from the MTV Awards. You’ll change your tune.

I didn’t get into Pearl Jam until 2003 so my perspective is not universal. Jeremy is the most boring song in the entire good part of catalogue (Ten through Riot Act) to me. Just completely uninterested in it.
