When Did You Feel Like an Adult?

I'm sure there aren't many people out there who immediately felt like an adult when they turned 18. So at what age did you finally, actually feel like a real adult? Was there any specific event or feeling that triggered it?

I’d say 30-35 is when I started achieving true, boring adult state. Combo of getting married and a parent dying. You begin to realize why a slog life is going to be.
And if you get lucky
You might find someone
To help you get over
The pain that will come

Probably around 27 or so when I got married. I no longer really looked at my parents as a fallback in case things didn’t go well. (Although we did move in with her parents for a little while between houses.) And if that didn’t do it, the birth of our first child 3 years later cemented it. (And now, she’s gonna graduate college in a month-and-a-half.)

40. Can't pretend I'm young anymore.

I've done this a bunch of times only to realize years later I was mostly wrong. I feel like an adult now but I'm sure future argo would be laughing if he could hear me say that. "How immature," he would scoff

The answer for me is 30. Somehow I just felt a switch flip inside on that birthday. But it was a very positive thing, I don’t mean it in the, “I’m old and life is boring now” way spike said.

I dreaded turning 30 but my thirties turned out to be awesome. I thought 40 wouldn't be so bad, but I am decaying in real time and everything hurts and people are dying and I want to take a nap.

Heh, yeah. I decided to have a kid at 42 on top of all that nonsense.

Like most of you, when I got married. Actually, more like when I got engaged. Being present for somebody else and being able to ask for help from somebody else overlaps a lot with what adulthood means to me.
And then I had a kid relatively late in life and the experience of watching toddlerhood and kindergarten in real time has me kind of feeling young again.

I remember the exact moment. I was in Miami when it happened. I was posting from the balcony of my apartment overlooking the beach. And I was having an argument with Adamdude.

I thought about this thread today when I watched clumps of my grey hair fall down the sides of my barber chair.

Most of the things I thought would make me feel that way did not.
I moved across the country with my girlfriend and began my teaching career. We got married and moved back. We took international vacations and bought a house. I turned 30. We had a kid. Then we had another. None of that made me feel like an adult. I remember the moment, though.
Our kids were 2 and a half and almost 1 and my wife had to leave for 4 days for work. I remember one of the days was Halloween and I was handing out candy with a baby on my hip, a toddler clutching my ankle, a nervous cat. That night after I got them to bed, I sat there completely exhausted and thought. “I’m a fucking adult.”
The next time I felt like an adult was taking the first family vacation. Every time I do that, I feel like a man.

When I bought my first condo and that following Christmas my gift wish list changed from video games to stuff like light bulbs and silverware.

Probably around when i was 14, my mom separated my sister´s dad and it was truly hard for everyone so i needed to step up and do a lot of stuff in the house.
Also around 16 when a few of my old friends died for substance abuse, i feel i learned a lot from that too. Kinda made me more interested on doing stuff and keep trying to be around.

Before I turned 18 for sure.
