Dark Matter is 2 years old now so the shine of newness is no longer present at least for me. Something Special is a nice little song, but Breakerfall is a very clear winner here. Is it in my top tier? Probably not, but it’s a momentum building opener that does its job well. Also a great song in the live setting.

I think it’s pretty neat that Future Days and Something Special will exit this tournament hand in hand.

I mean in terms of craft, no. But Breakerfall is a B- version of something Pearl Jam can do well in their sleep. Something Special is charming in its schmaltzy affection, is just bittersweet enough to be interesting, and the music is catchy. I like it.
