The thought that I’m likely not even halfway through a normal working career haunts me daily

I’ll have been out of the work force for six years come next month. It’s honestly started to become a bit lonely now that my kid’s at school and getting more into after school activities. Like today, it’s another parent’s turn in our rotation to take our girls to their swim class, so I have like a nine hour stretch to fill with stuff, and I can’t just putter around the house every day getting things done or I’ll lose it. But that’s not every day.

Still, I need to figure something out to occupy myself, but not sure what, now that I’m 48 and in a country where I’ve had no previous work experience.

ill be 57 in a few months. My 401K is a bit behind what it should be but over the past 6 years it has grown by about 220K so hopefully that trend continues.

I just got a corporate email that i am eligible for paid benefits if choose to retire now. they take your age, the years you have been at the company and if that is 62 or older you can retire and keep some of your medical/dental/eye benefits.

If i were to retire now they would pay 25%.
if those two numbers hit 65 then its 50%
70 total years 75%
75 years it is 100%

my coworker who retired had 30 years at the company and retired at 59 so he is living the life for sure

or just do something part time like uber or what not. Im not privy to your whole situation but if you do not have a "need" to work full time just find something you like and see if you can parlay that into a part time gig.

like DIY projects work at a hardware store or lowes. if you like older women try being a part time escort. the world is at your feet mister

prolific.com provides university studies and surveys where you can earn a few bucks per survey from your laptop. not sure what the net return in uber is after gas expenses, time, depreciation - but i have a buddy who was making like $10-20/ hr doing those surveys at one point and you can do at your own pace etc

Yeah something part time is essential, as I’ll still need the flexibility. There are a lot of older people in my area, and I tend to have good repoire with the older crowd, so was thinking I could do something where I help drive them to medical appointments. Uber Old.

Well, this is depressing the shit out of me. How can “never” be an answer? No one should have to work past 65. I’m hoping for 60 but realistically preparing for 62.

Planning to retire in that 65-67 range. I have a pension and will have a fair amount saved for "fun" money due to conservative spending and steady employment. My goal is to have 10 good years of golfing 5-7 days a week. A long way to go, however.

I want to wind down at 60 and transition to of counsel. By 62 I want to be done.
