A more accurate way of ranking favorite PJ albums?

Post by flannelking »

It seems like a lot of PJ fans choose their favorite albums by ranking each song 1-5 without comparing the songs on all albums with each other. Maybe it's not the most accurate way of ranking favorite albums? I was trying to figure out which album I liked best between Vitalogy and Riot Act, whether it would be Vitalogy for having more 5 star songs or RA for having more songs and more songs that are solid. Well, clearly if judging albums and not just ranking songs in PJ's catalog, the latter is the more accurate approach. So the answer to setting up that type of ranking system seemed to be first grouping all songs from all albums based on similar style and quality. Each album with the exception of Backspacer was my favorite album at some point in time. MY order is likely to change as about everyone else's do.

1. RA 78
2. Vitalogy 74
3. Vs/Yield 72/72
5. S/T/Ten 61/61
7. No Code 57
8. Binaural 44
9. BS 26

I am sometimes blown away by how similar the songs listed above are to each other. Especially Satan's Bed and Low Light.

With fourteen songs on it, it definitely does not have as many songs as most other Pearl Jam albums.

some of those aren't songs. they're more like audio skits or underwear skids, take your pic.

i've been wondering if maybe i could become the mascot here. and i think i should be given some authority. i 'clearly' am a top candidate, not only for the reasons you stated above but also because of my screen name. flannel is one of the founding fibers which constructed pearl jam as the colossal force they are today. the other being corduroy but to a lesser degree. their music isn't bad either.

And lastly, I'm aware I made a few errors due to the high complexity level of the task (comparing 9 albums simultaneously), but for a low fee of ony 5.95, I'll compare any two albums for any one person.

pearl jam albums only.

Because I am a person who is a perfectionist and ambidextrous-brained, I will take yet another new approach. I will compare Lightning Bolt to every other Pearl Jam album, one comparison at a time and song by song. No longer will I be in the "I like No Code best because In My Tree and Present Tense are my favorite songs" camp, like you beasts. In comparison I'm more refined. I will take my usual high road of excellence.

Pearl Jam rose from the ashes of Mother Love Flannel.

If you tally the scores, doesn't that ultimately lead to unfair comparisons since Backspacer has 11 songs and self-titled has 13? Wouldn't it make much more sense to average the scores and the mean score would be the winner? :)
