I think part of the problem with these types of movies is that, when they were first imagined, the idea of an alien civilization attacking cities was probably semi novel. It also had a larger scope than a lot of movies risked to go, and were something of a precursor to alien film stories.
Now, we do "aliens break shit and makes us look weak" movies like every week. So whatever novelty or brand they had is lost. But at the same time, Tom Cruise HAS to be treated as the central component of the movie, because it is the entire draw of the film. So invention, creative rethinking, and brand evolution are lost. We get a few human characters, who have their own subplots or little dramas, but the movie is about TOM CRUISE because in order to sell it it has to be worked as a movie about TOM CRUISE...again.
And when "Aliens so look out," is your entire premise for your movie...well, that's kind of tiring to even think about, because we're so inundated with that kind of image by movies that often have other things going for them, and just happened to include an "alien attack" as part of their story or as the basis for a single action set piece.

meh.
at least it looks like it's trying to find its own twist on that type of movie, which keeps it from feeling like 'more of the same.' also oblivion was not terrible, ruddo.
lol at tom cruise being a new recruit though.

When I was googling for images from Battle: L.A. I came across the unfortunate news that a sequel is in the works.

Did the temperature drop a little where you are, while you were typing that? Because I read it and a chill crept through the room.

As long as they cast someone better for the lead, all should be fine. Like Sam Worthington.

The mech suits are cool....its neat that they can make them work from a special effects standpoint with that sort of fluidity. I don't quite get leaving the torso and the head exposed in a battle suit except to show it's Tom Cruise in there.

Every time I see the guy in that kind of flick, I feel like he's slumming. But I don't actually remember the last time I saw him anything really good. Maybe it's just the fact that he's able to make really poorly designed characters in shitstorms like Terminator a little engaging? I dunno.

Looks like they just augment strength and movement and such, so they aren't really meant to protect.
And it looks like a draft situation, giving the old people and children weapons and shipping them off, so Tom is probably a school teacher who got drafted or some shit.

Blockbuster of the year so far. Surprisingly solid movie.
