Let's Fucking Talkin About It: Know your rights (The Clash)

So I'm sitting around in the man cave/laundry room tonight, putting down a few beers as this blizzard has trapped us to our home. I gotta say, when you listen to pretty much any version from 2003 to when they played it in 2012, you may never want to listen to the new versions again. I was sitting round when the first time they played it in Australia came on and man it was so insane. Ed's vocals were just brutal, he screamed out every verse and just really killed it, future version were good, but not this good. I witnessed it as in Nassau, that pretty crazy, I kinda think I left this off my mix as I didn't want to be reminded of the incident. Anyone else like it?

Know Your Rights has always been one of my least favorite Clash songs and I think the Pearl Jam versions are significantly worse.

Do you like that they at least tried?

A for effort?

That who tried? Pearl Jam? No. It was a terrible choice of a Clash song to cover.

And I'm pretty sure the Clash tried less on Know Your Rights than anything else they ever did. It sounds like someone trying to parody a Clash song.

It's almost as bad as Springsteen doing London Calling.

It's a pretty dumb song.

I think the Uniondale version is fantastic. One of my all time favorite covers. The other versions I've heard are okay.

Yo Low
Hope that blizzard passes soon but good to hear you're putting your time to good use

I was at that debut performance of which you speak. I didn't know the song and thought it kinda dragged on (I didn't appreciate the awesome EV vocals at the time, because of course did not know how much they would deteriorate in the next few years). Was very relieved when it was over and they busted out Breath and Footsteps :nice:

Yeah, from memory the band is much tighter on the Uniondale version.

I thought it was great in person (Champaign), though it was admittedly more about the moment than about it being any kind of great song. It felt like an air raid siren going off, and was very much in the spirit of the "anti-war assembly" vibe of the 2003 shows. It doesn't really hold up on bootlegs. It certainly seems silly that they've resurrected it now.

Agree in full. I didn't even know it was back.

Was there any intro to it? NSA reference or something in that vein?

It's not a great Clash song, but I like it. The spiraling rockabilly guitar part, especially. I'd rather listen to it over about a third of Sandinista, at least.

Yeah, the original is fun. Rockabilly with a touch of carnival barker.

Ditto, maybe I'm not a HUGE fan, but to me this song was a pretty odd choice for PJ to cover.
I often wind up loving their versions more than the originals ("Walking the Cow" comes to mind) but not this one.

Played 3 times in Sept. 2012 (2 US festivals, plus that Missoula show), so not an NSA reference.

Worst PJ cover ever (or close to it). Makes me cringe, and I hope they never play it again.

The only version I ever enjoyed was the one from Tokyo in 2003.
