A dining room playlist is not to be taken lightly. From a restaurant's perspective, you want to play music that makes guests want to enjoy themselves yet quickly move on to the next thing on a busy night (maybe a Stax Records collection or some modern pop in the way of daft punk or arcade fire) and you want music that coaxes guests to cozy up and order that last round or that dessert on a slow night (early Texas blues perhaps, or maybe something in the vein of Wes Anderson soundtrack artists.)

From a guest's perspective, you'll want to hear music that is both unobtrusive and interesting enough to spark a thought or maybe a conversation, though oftentimes a guest doesn't realize that they want this until they have come to a restaurant that fails miserably at this concept.

Then there's the issue of volume. Oh boy, is this important. It's sometimes easier to forgive the too-liberal use of seasonings in a chef's dish than it is a dining room soundtrack that is loud enough to smother a conversation.

I manage a restaurant that strives to do many different things well and is open continuously from 9:00 am to midnight. From a coffee shop to a late-night cocktail destination, moods are constantly evolving. I think about music in the dining room constantly.

one of my favorite places to eat in NY was Babbo. The food was always outstanding as well as the conversation but I would always come home and remember eating a lamb chop just as When the Levee breaks would come on and then make my way to dessert and listen to Michael sing Half a World Away

We typically go the older jazz route. Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, modal-era Miles Davis... that sort of stuff.

I have a playlist that consist largely of rock music (as most of my playlist do), but this one is more on the chill side. It's not chill like "downer" vibe though, it's more like my version of easy listening rock.
