I voted for sometimes but I don't care that much about either of these.

sometimes is one of my favorite pearl jam songs. its just about the perfect album/show opener. kinda gives me a boner how great it is.

Love when they open with it. That and Of THe Girl need to be the standard openers for awhile. So great.

What a great move it was by PJ to open up No Code with this gem. Ballsy in a way too.

yeah, at the time, with the first 3 albums opening with heavy/fast songs, they open with this weird, quiet little song. its so good. its got some of vedder's best vocals...'sometimes i cringe'....'sometimes i kneel'....the guitar interplay is awesome, too. this song is almost perfect.

seeing arc live was really quite a moving experience, but - sometimes is the only logical move here

There are plenty of songs I'd have voted Arc in favor of, Of the Girl isn't one of them.

"Arc" is neat and I like where it sits on Riot Act, but I love "Sometimes" as a song. And for the ditch-seeking left turn it represents.

I love the studio version of Sometimes; I think it's one of the band's high water marks in terms of production. Ed's vocal sounds so 'right there', for lack of a better term.

sometimes is just so beautifully understated. it really was amazing how well they used to be able to execute a more modest ambition and capture sonically particular shades amongst the many of life's various shades of grey.

Sometimes live grates on me way more than it should. I know that it's impossible to capture the way the studio version works, but it still seems so far from what makes the song for me.

i caught it live in 2000 - back when they cared - and thought it was great. but yeah, it's a tall order to ask them to capture in an arena setting what likely couldn't be captured in any venue outside of a living room.

I'm unnecessarily harsh; there's plenty of live versions I've heard that I like. I think they actually make the right choice in making it more serrated live; like you said, capturing that vibe they found in the studio in an arena is a fool's errand.

this is a close call for me as I value PJ songs where Ed's contemplativeness shines through and I think these songs both really embody that depth

initially, sometimes just jumps to mind having been the opener/channeler of anticipation for so many great PJ shows. it just brings to mind this incredible excitement

but having seen Arc live in 2003, and knowing that this was the deal:

'The track entitled "Arc" was recorded as a vocal tribute to the nine people who died at the Roskilde Festival in June 2000. Vedder only performed this song nine times on the 2003 tour, and the band left the track off all released bootlegs.[78

just gives it this extra order of cosmic magnitude and with it the slight edge in my book

Someone here wrote an essay about Sometimes being a sort of prayer in reverse. I've really enjoyed that song since having the new perspective. Arc is cool for what it is, but it's an Ed solo thing... and I really cringed when he did it live in front of me in '03. It's also pretty telling that they excluded it from the boots.
