How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us: An REM Thread

Post by washing machine »

I finally got around to listening to Collapse Into Now, and I'm declaring it an instant favorite. Hearing it this long after the break-up made it impossible not to hear it as a sort of career retrospective, which is how I'm choosing to view the album as a whole. There's plenty of nods both lyrically and melodically to much of their past work, isn't there?

I wish these guys were still around.

I wish they were around too. But I think I like "We All Go Back to Where We Belong" better than just about anything in "Collapse into Now"

I had the choice between seeing them or Radiohead in 2003, and I chose Radiohead. I'm not sure I would make a different decision if faced with that same scenario again, weirdly enough.

oh this band...im not sure if i can listen to their songs again, they are just too personal now for me, and it just hurts. Not because of their breakup, but for a different reason.

That having said, Collapse into now is a wonderful record...and Blue, a masterpiece.

i saw both bands and REM was far more emotional than RH for me. Still both bands are amazing, i dont know why we have to choose one, but in my list REM ranks higher.

Not saying either or is better, just saying you couldn't go wrong there.

We don't have to choose one in this thread, but I did have to choose one for a birthday present in 2003.

while there are a few songs on collapse i prefer, we all go back is a great song, and a wonderful capstone song for the career

Collapse is a great example of a band mining familiar territory but pulling it off because the songs still feel fresh
