Re: Match CC: Unemployable vs. Come Back
I know most people dont, but I love those 2 quite a bunch.
They used to be my top 2 from the S/T album (which i actually like pretty much in its entirety) for a long while, not anymore, but both still have a place in my heart.
Unemployable, I guess. But one of the tougher ones for me.
....still no matter which song wins it will be destroyed by in my tree.

It's kind of buried due to the production, but the riff to Unemployable during the verse is fantastic, especially the way it bends back into the major.

Re: Match CC: Unemployable vs. Come Back
"Come Back" should have been Pearl Jam's first foray into authoring songs for the purpose of giving them to other artists--it's a good song performed by the wrong band, the heavy-handed rock presentation mitigating what at heart is a very tuneful, very soulful song.
"Unemployable" is a great piece of Matt Cameron craft, but Eddie's attempt to speak for a character who sounds like someone he'd typically make fun of feels insincere and transparent. Both are good songs with asterisks. Vote goes to "Unemployable"--the little off-beat time signature wins me over in the end.

Re: Match CC: Unemployable vs. Come Back
Agreed, Unemployable's lyrics drag it down a bit. It's not necessarily that they're not heartfelt, but there's no character in them to me. It's chock full of the tropes that a person devoid of actual inspiration would employ if they had a subject for a lyric already in mind.
It's funny, though; for all the talk of Backspacer being the band's 'pop' record, I feel like Unemployable is their most successful and best use of pop music cliches on either record. They absolutely co-opt an oft-used pop trick on the chorus, and I think it sounds great.

The chorus is what really turns me off to that song. Even more than the unintentionally condescending lyrics

I've always really liked Come Back. It seems to be getting "trendier."

I really love both of these songs. But Unemployable gets my vote.

I like both these songs, but I think Unemployable wins. Talking about Ed's lyrics, I don't know, but I've never found them to be real serious, even if they're supposed to be. I think that's why I've never had any problems with them like others might.

It's really remarkable that Pearl Jam managed to pull from the same Shania Twain song twice.

I think we should. However there would be a strict no covers, no demos rule. And I might even leave songs out like pry, to and stupid mop, just because those would be too obvious of choices for most RMers.Heathen wrote:So we're doing this worst pearl jam song tourney again, right?

Also, inherently shitty songs like LTRP or The Fixer should get byes for, like, the first 10 rounds.cutuphalfdead wrote:I think we should. However there would be a strict no covers, no demos rule.
