Experience Hendrix Tour

Post by MadTIGERmaN »

If you get a chance to go see this... DO IT!

Seriously one of the best concerts Ive been too.

Depending on the city / revolving cast of musicians, what I saw wont be what you see, BUT

Show opens with Billy Cox on bass, Chris Layton (of SRV Double Trouble) on drums, and two others on guitar (whos names I didnt catch as they walked out together so you didnt know which one was which, and neither is listed on the lineup on the website) They opened with a great long version of Stone Free, followed by a awesome Machine Gun, and then came Freedom (LOVE both those bass lines, getting to hear Billy Cox play those made it worth the price of admission alone)

from that point the revolving door of musicians kicked in, and I really couldnt tell you what/who came next? But an early highlight was Dweezil Zappa and Robby Krieger (from the doors) playing a freaking awesome version of Manic Depression

Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes joined a couple songs on and off through the night

originally not on the artist list, but now apparently having such a great time he stayed with the tour, one Bootsy Collins (in full Funkadelic outfit) comes out to play Purple Haze and Foxy Lady with Eric Gales.

Eric Johnson closed out the first set with an extended run of songs with a guest here and there. Great version of Bold as Love with him and Robinson. and an extremely extended version of "May This Be Love" with Eric Gales

after just about a hour and forty five mins... they had a 20 min intermission

Doyle Bramhall II comes out and plays a nice 12 string acoustic version of Hear My Train A Comin
he then leads a nice run of Gypsy Boy / Hey Baby / In From the Storm

Kenny Wayne Shepherd comes out next, great versions of Gypsy Eyes, and Come On Let the Good Times Roll
he then gets to steal the show. Voodoo Chile Blues / Voodoo Child (Slight Return) for 20 mins... just wow

The only guys on the bill who got the balls to follow that are the legends... back out comes Billy Cox and Robby Krieger to close the show. They plowed through a fun version of Changes, followed by Hey Joe with Mato Nanji on lead vocals (he had been playing rhythm guitar / occasional leads on and off all night but never really got the spot light till this point) and closed the night with a nice long version of Red House, with Robby, Mato, and Robert Fortune on guitar (think that was the only song Fortune played all night) Robby got a nice extended bottleneck guitar solo showing off his signature sound. Really cool to hear Red House played that way.

Just a great great great show, moves fast, and considering the revolving door of guitar players playing Hendrix songs, the "band" was tight as fuck! I was expecting some sloppy moments but there just wasnt any.

Would love to see a Seattle show with McCready!
