Future Islands
This was on Letterman the other night. I have watched it 3 times now because I keep cracking up laughing. He's sure into it at least!

There's finally a singer who gives more energy than Eddie Vedder!

There's nothing entirely ground-breaking with the music, though that doesn't mean it isn't really good, but I fucking love their lead man. Not just that performance, but his voice! It is just outstanding.

Re: Future Islands
the reaction to their Letterman performance didn't surprise me, but i do think it's weird they've gotten all this buzz/interest based solely off of one late night TV performance.
I saw them open for Okkervil River a few years ago and was just confused and mostly annoyed, saw them again last October opening for Phantogram and didn't mind them as much, but was still mostly just confused/amused.
the new album has a couple really great tunes, but for the most part way too much cheesy 80's synth tones for my tastes.

I haven't listened to the album yet, so I'm certainly not screaming out "ALBUM OF THE YEAROHMYGOD", BUT(oops left my caps on)..ahem.., but I think the reaction to that performance is justified. Samuel T. Herring fucking killed it. I'm not big on social media or network television, which is why I've just now seen this clip, but I actually prefer that version to the album track. I also can see after reading a couple of articles on these guys that a lot of fans are giving the "I've been a fan of these guys since before they were popular" push-back against this sudden boost of fame, but I refuse to temper my reaction!solace wrote:the reaction to their Letterman performance didn't surprise me, but i do think it's weird they've gotten all this buzz/interest based solely off of one late night TV performance.

Re: Future Islands
yeah, i can see that i suppose... it's certainly his own unique thing for sure. the death metal vocal snarls at times aren't really my thing. i agree with you that the Letterman performance makes the album cut seem kinda dull comparatively.
i know you weren't referring to me, but if anything else i'd personally state i WASN'T a fan of them before they broke out recently, moreso than just bewildered. but yeah, i know a lot of friends/people who are fully on board now just from seeing them on Letterman, which is pretty cool/crazy, good for them.

Haha, aww, come on, it's not that bad. I kind of enjoyed it. It's a comedy act, right?

I enjoyed it too. It sucks to high heavens but God it's hilarious.theplatypus wrote:Haha, aww, come on, it's not that bad. I kind of enjoyed it. It's a comedy act, right?
Some of the comments on youtube made me laugh also. I think one said: He sings, he dances, then he coughs up a hairball and speed skates, awesome.

Re: Future Islands
i like these guys, and i think that letterman performance is just weird enough to work (like father john misty a couple years ago). that being said, i don't know if i could handle a full show of sam herring.

Re: Future Islands
After some time of "I can't believe this stupid song is stuck in my head", I can say that I unequivocally and unironically love this song, and especially that performance.
