The Doors

Post by darth_vedder »

Been talking about them a lot in the PJ Praising thread, so figured they may as well have their own, rather than hijacking other threads. I don't really have much to say about them anymore, considering we kinda tapped that well in the other thread. Nonetheless, if anybody wants to talk about them, post videos, rant/rave, whatever, in regards to the Doors, I guess this is the place.

Really like the Doors....maybe even love them. I only listen every few years since I can't listen to anything or anyone all the time anymore but when I do the songs sound real good. They have at least 25 all time classic songs that's pretty good for any band.

When I was 20, I had their two disc hits collection playing in continuous rotation in my vehicle. It was phenomenal. "Crystal Ship" was my favorite. Then unbeknownst to me, my father traded my car in for another one without telling me. I still had The Doors in the inside compartment of the driver door. When he finally revealed my slightly improved new ride (2002 Saturn, woohoo!), I had mixed feelings. "Where's The Doors," I asked. I was such an ungrateful son.

Anyway, I lost The Doors.

I think that this is a great band and the fact that they've been played to death and that the mythologizing of Morrison can rub off many people don't really matter. Densmore is an awesome drummer with a jazz background, Krieger brought some flamenco elements into rock'n'roll and his playing is mightily original, Manzarek, what can I say, you can recognize his style among every other keyboardist. Their output, or outpour is massive for such a short period of time - a bit like CCR. I happen to like Morrison' voice and all around attitude. Some of his lyrics are quite intense as well, if a bit dated. It's quite easy to put them down in retrospect but i think that Jim was a product of its era and whatever is said about his writings, he somehow managed to introduce poetry to the rock medium in a way that hadn't quite been done before.

Doors just came on my Pandora station a few minutes ago. The station is based on Jack White.

I would like to hear an instrumental ensemble featuring Densmore and Krieger -- those guys were good. Manzarek can stay too if he sticks to playing a real piano -- most of his keyboard leads sound like the music to an 8-bit Nintendo game. But on their existing recordings, Morrison ruins the whole thing for me. I can maybe listen to him for 60 seconds before I have to turn him off.

I get the Morrison hate, and not liking the keyboards, sure. They're not everyone's cup of tea. Saying they suck though I don't think is right either... They're probably both overrated by those who love them, and underrated that those that won't listen bc they hate Morrison.

They had a lot of cool tunes, most are deep cuts not on the greatest hits (though many of those are good too). When trag posted here, both of us really liked LA Women, and especially the bass. Jerry Scheff (Elvis's bassist) was pretty great, and really brought in some iconic bass lines (Riders On The Story / LA Woman). He and Robby Krieger kill it on "Been Down So Long". That there might be my favorite Doors song.

Anyway, I think they were pretty cool and blended blues, jazz, and psychedelic rock together nicely. Morrison did seem to be kind of a dick though.

I loved the Doors in high school. I listened all the time, bought vinyl, the works. And then I just didn’t care anymore. I’ve barely listened in 20 years.

Counterpoint: I never much cared for the Doors when I was younger but I think they're great now.
