I think this is something I could be interested in. Is it upsetting? My guess is not much worse than throwing rocks at birds.

It's different. They're mammals and they are substantial. When you kill one, unless you're an asshole, you have to deal with it. You have to look at it, gut it, know that you ended its life. It's not for everyone. If you're not going to eat it, don't kill it. Killing for sport is vile.
I was raised in a house where it was an integral part of life. When my dad was laid off from the mines, he poached, and we got by on venison. Many deer die here in the winter from starvation, and many people die here from hitting deer with their cars. I think hunting can be an honorable endeavor. I deer hunt every November solely as a way of bonding with my old man. I enjoy being alone in the wilderness, but I don't care for hunting specifically. My best seasons are the ones when I leave without blood on my hands.
If you will pursue it, get really good at shooting first. My grandpa shot many deer in his life. Then one day he shot one and it didn't just die. It bawled and looked at him as he walked up to finish it. He never fired a gun after that day.

It's already pretty cold up here and I wanted to report that this isnt so bad. (Yeah, I know I said I was done with this sub-forum, but I figured if people were interested in deer hunting then it is my duty to let them now).

I watched my buddy gut n skin the deer he shot.. he even let me cut off its head with a sawzall..
That said venison is delicious.. I almost wanna hunt but my friends go out too early and no one wants a loaded gun in my hands.. usually my friends hook me up w deer meat n jerky
don't feel bad about it, it's just the food chain at work

It would be the food chain at work if it was your best and/or only option to eat. But it isn't, so it's not.

The typically hunted white-tailed deer is about as common as it gets. I think their population is around 40 million.
