The Tree of Life ( and Terrence Malick thread)

Post by Harry Lime »

Love it, or hate it. It deserves its own thread.

I go back and forth between this and Bad Lands for my favorite Malick film. I think this one is his best, so far. It's flawed, but it's strengths far outweigh it's weaknesses. Probably his masterpiece.

Malick working on a director's cut. I heard one version was 6 hours long. I can only hope.

Jesus. I liked this film a lot, but a 6 hour version is just completely unnecessary.

Yeah, I really liked it but wouldn't make it through 6 hours...

I heard 3 hours of it is Sean Penn walking around confused.

Malick's close friend & editor reports that his next film, which features the two below, is more dialogue driven and less experimental. I was kind of hoping that'd be the case this time around.

More dialogue is fine, but I still want at least one 10-minute shot of wind blowing through a field or some dude staring out of a window.

Imagining Gosling doing that just gave me chills.

Great article on Malick and his alleged 20 year hiatus.

Loved it. Encapsulates a lot of my personal philosophy and the view of the world that I would like to share with people, and does so mostly without words. I saw it in the theater twice and both times I was left with this deep feeling of peace. I have a lot of favorite parts but the sort of shimmering, formless shape that reoccurs probably sticks with me the most. It's so completely beautiful.

“Well, I, I, uh, I guess I don’t want to talk about it …”

— Terrence Malick’s last on-the-record statement

I've liked the guy for a while now. And I'd count Badlands and Tree of Life among some of my favorite all time films. But that article really endeared me to him.

I really need to see New World.
