Big fan of Alex Garland's work and of the cast. Very excited to see this.
Here's a quote from Star Domhnall Gleeson:
"I've been lucky to read some phenomenal scripts in the past few years. The Alex Garland one 'Ex Machina' is absolutely tip-top superb. It's a three-hander, a psychologically intense thriller. It's me and Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. It's beautiful."

Most Sci-Fi endings are disappointing in one way or another. Overall, Sunshine was a lovely film experience. I don't even remember how it ends. Which is a good thing and a bad thing, I suppose.

What's not to like? Well written. Well directed. Well acted. Gripping. Taught. Gorgeous to look at. It's not an all time great or anything like that. It's not gonna crack my top 10 (probably not even top 25) scifi movies. But it's solid and enjoyable.
Actually, I kinda wanna watch it again now that we're talking about it.

Disagree. Disagree. Maybe. Disagree. Disagree.
I found it dull, trite, riddled with cliches, and stylistically irritating. I spent most of the running time rolling my eyes. Especially through that dumb as hell final act.

But aren't you a fan of Event Horizon?
Oh yeah, big fan. But the direction, visuals, tone, and ideas are very different. And it could be argued that Sunshine's final act is a straight rip-off of Event Horizon's final act.
For the record, I don't have anything against Alex Garland. He's written some good stuff. I'll check out the trailer for this as soon as I get a chance.

They are different. Sunshine's are better. Of course we each like one and dislike the other and of course we're on opposite sides of that coin. That's in keeping. I vastly prefer the visuals, tone and ideas of Sunshine.
And "ripoffs" don't much bother me. Nothing new under the sun and all that. It's much more about which is better/more effective. And again, the medal goes to Sunshine. From what I remember. But I don't really remember either very strongly. It's been years since I've seen those films, much longer for EH.
