wheat at first
like wheat bread only more sickly sweet and at the oddest times
the train
the sidewalk
the bedroom

it was so bad so present so invading
at times nearly retching

later i think kerosene, or petroleum...
i was never sure, but related to gasoline and yet not that
waking up
breathing in too sharply sometimes it would
catch
me
otherwise
unaware

concrete and like a wall these smells without cause
right there and not at all

now some unidentified something
sweet and slightly rotting
food or aged clothing
it's always hanging in the air

like waiting
