"Kurt Cobain and I were the top two scribes in the nineties"

Billy Corgan defined his relationship with Kurt Cobain in a new interview, saying that he did not look up to the Nirvana frontman. "In the purest sense of the word, we were competitors," the Smashing Pumpkins frontman told The Independent. "He and I were the top two scribes, and everybody else was a distant third.

Similarly, he dismissed Eddie Vedder when the interviewer told him the Pearl Jam frontman had said he suffered "survivor's guilt" after Cobain's suicide. "That would be Eddie Vedder," Corgan said. "Somehow he makes it about him even when it's about somebody else. I had a much more personal perspective, because I'd been in contact with Courtney [Love] through a lot of the setting up of that period, and afterwards. I found it devastating because, whether we wanted to admit it or not, [Cobain] was quarterback of the football team, leading the aesthetic and integrity charge."

Although Corgan and Cobain did not get along, the singer said he misses the Nirvana frontman's gumption. "I like to think a lot of the crap music that followed wouldn't have existed if he had been around to criticize it," he said.

As for his own artistic perspective, Corgan still wears his scars on his sleeves. After relating a story about how his father credits his "bad childhood" toughened him up for success, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman said it didn't have to be that way. "If I'd been loved right, with the gifts that I had, I might have been a classical composer, having a very quiet life and a glass of wine, and not have been in this dirty pop business," Corgan said.

'Lol' at one egomaniac criticizing another for being so.

You'd think the guy would have some pride. I think that early 90's music is getting to the point where I feel its not aging well anymore. 50 year olds jockeying for position on the pecking order 20 years later is just kind of sad. Its like Geno Smith saying he's the best QB on the Jets.

Oh for fucks sake, Billy is as bad as Axl Rose. A self obsessed perfectionist that has either fired or shitted every other band member out, so he can have full creative dominance. What a total fuckstick.

How to handle Billy Corgan.

Enjoy the excellent music he made from Gish to Machina, and then pretend he ceased to exist after the year 2000.

"Somehow he makes it about him even when it's about somebody else (next sentence starts with 'I')"

We clearly need to crowdfund more Billy Corgan interviews. They're spectacular.

I love how 90's musicians still talk about that time like they were accomplishing something of import...really changing things, man.

Holy shit.

The most common reason one musician denigrates another is because they make more money than them, the most common reason they adulate one is because they're dead.

All of this animosity with two of my faves. :(

I love both. I think BC is a better songwriter but I digress. I heard BC say in an interview once he wasn't a fan of EV. He didn't dislike him but their personalities just clashed. Nothing to see here really. They toured together in what 1991? Maybe EV stole some of BC's diet Coke and it really upset him? Who knows.

I like Nirvana the least out of these 3 bands in question (though I still loved and love Nirvana) but Kurt was the best songwriter not only of that era but one of the best last 30 years. My 2 cents. :finger:
