I've been on a little bit of an Animal Collective kick lately, and I noticed that we didn't have a dedicated thread on here, so I am rectifying. These guys are one of my favorite bands, with a fairly diverse catalog. I know that Mike is a fan, but I don't as if I've heard anyone else mention them much on here.
For the uninitiated, here's an introduction with a cut from each of their main albums:
A Panda Bear song popped up on a station this pas weekend that I really liked. After a quick google I was pretty impressed/intimidated with all of the associated releases. This thread is just perfect in timing to help me dig into the catalogue. Thanks, man.

yep, i'm a fan. i haven't really delved into is their pre-Sung Tongs albums which is something i always wanted to do. Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished is the most acclaimed of those, right? panda bear's solo albums are another thing i'm trying to get into but somehow what i listened to never clicked for me. i will give the new album a chance.
my favorite albums are Feels and Strawberry Jam I think. their sound on Feels is something i wish they had explored a little more. it's the perfect mix of their weirdness and pop-appeal for me
while sounding very organic.
The Purple Bottle is my jam.

Yes Mike, Spirit is the most widely acclaimed of their early work, and for good reason. It's some of their most melodic and well-structured work, but uses an unusual sound palette to achieve that, thus making for a very mysterious and ethereal album.
I've not bothered with Avey's Slasher Flicks stuff, because it didn't really appeal to me. Panda solo can be hit or miss. Person Pitch is fantastic, and his pre-Collective s/t album is even better. Tomboy had some tracks I liked and others not so much. I'm not really familiar with the rest.
I'll have to check out Jane, geg.

I listened to it the other night and liked some of it. Other parts almost gave me a headache. To be fair, I wasn't really in the right mood for an album like that. I'll try again some other time.
Right now Strawberry Jam is spinning and I love every second of it. Fireworks never fails to put me in a good and somewhat hyper mood. When that album works for me, it works really really well. That's the Animal Collective experience for me I guess. Sometimes they annoy the crap out of me, sometimes I love them so so much. Definitely not something for every mood.

It's true that there are some real WTF? aspects to their music. A lot of the more freeform noise stuff that was more common early in their career can certainly be a turnoff, but usually I'll just regard it as background sound if I'm not in the mood, rather than be outright annoyed by it.
Strawberry Jam is usually my favorite AC album as well. I think it captures the best sides of all their musical personalities in one place.

Possibly. I think you'd like the majestic vocals more than anything else. It just sort of unfolds and flows on headphones. Good winter music. Noah Lennox truly has a fantastic voice.
Love Merriweather Post Pavillion, but cant get into their other stuff.
Did get to see them live last year and they were really great.
