D4 Round 2: Sirens vs. Gonna See My Friend

This is tough, since I really like Sirens, but Gonna See My Friend is one of my favorite openers, and one of my favorite fast songs.

Sirens. Gonna See My Friend is fine. I like it well enough. But Sirens kinda hits me right in the soft spot.

I'd like to file a formal protest. This is fixed, it has to be. No way Sirens is better than GSMF, one of only two good songs on Backspacer.

Sirens. I've never been a fan of GSMF. It's maybe my least favorite song on PJs (by far) worst album.

I didn't vote in this round, but if I did I would probably vote for Sirens. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure which of the bland, poppy rockers on BS GSMF is.

Someone once posted that Sirens is fine but they just weren't fine with PJ doing it. That's how I feel.

I've noticed that Australians have different PJ tastes. But Their tastes are better than the rest of you. I'm moving to Australia.

I couldn't let Sirens take this.

Sirens is another piece of snot. My vote just tied things up.

Anything to kick out Sirens from this thing.

I may change my vote to Sirens if this gets even closer.

GSMF is an exciting, dynamic balls-to-the-wall proto-punk rocker. It reminds me of The Who's best post-Tommy work. I don't care about the lyrics. And it really shouldn't be compared to "Life Wasted", which is as far from dynamic as can be.

I refer to a song as "dynamic" when there's a feeling that it isn't just a base four-chord rocker chugging along, when there are different clearly defined sections with different rhythms, when there's a buildup and a climax. I feel like GSMF was written as an attempt to emulate The Who's "The Real Me", maybe because of the band realizing that previous tour how much fun they were having playing it.

As to why it's "exciting", it has all to do with the performance. I like the guitar arrangements, I like the verse arpeggios and the bent E string in the chorus. I like Matt's playing that sounds slightly off-time but not quite (and again, I'm thinking this is an attempt at approximating Keith Moon or Pete Thomas' playing "under the beat" rather than on it). I really like Eddie's madman delivery. I think it's a great song.

And I've never even read the lyrics.
