Christopher Nolan To Direct Former Steven Spielberg Sci-Fi Project 'Interstellar'


There is no director in Hollywood who keeps things closer to the chest than Christopher Nolan, but even we didn't expect the announcement of his next film so soon. It looks like now that he's done with the Batman movies, Nolan is cooking up something even more twisty and ambitious than "Inception."

THR reports that Nolan is in talks to direct and produce "Interstellar." The project has a script from his longtime collaborator and brother Jonathan Nolan, and will deal with time travel and alternate dimensions, telling the story of a group of explorers who go through a wormhole. Earning its sci-fi bonafides, the film was developed by theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, and has actually been brewing for years. In fact, Steven Spielberg was once attached to direct.

As we wrote a couple of years ago in our Ten Dead Projects We'd Like To See Resurrected feature, it was just one of the many projects Spielberg had on his plate that fell to the wayside as he pursued “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” and “War Horse.” The project is slated to be a co-production between Paramount and Warner Bros., but it's not certain if he'll still be involved on some level, though it is curious that "Robopocalypse" just got indefinitely delayed.

Is it just the Batman stuff you're not a fan of, Orson? Or does it go beyond that?

Christopher Nolan's Merging An Original Idea With Jonah Nolan's Old Screenplay For 'Interstellar'


It looks like Christopher Nolan fans will still have plenty to talk to about in 2013 -- and it won't all be about the Oscar snub "The Dark Knight Rises" received. Last night came word that, awards season or not, Nolan was already putting together a new project, the sci-fi pic "Interstellar." The big talking point around the movie was that it was something Steven Spielberg was once kicking around, with a script by Jonah Nolan and a story developed by theoretical physicist Kip Thorne. But now, there's even more reason to be excited, as the director will be putting his own distinct stamp on the material.

According to Deadline, Nolan is taking the script that his brother wrote, and combining it with his own original idea, and writing a new script (the movie will retain the title). Thorne is still on board as a technical consultant. As for the exact story, yesterday it was said that it will follow a group of explorers who go through a wormhole, in a story about time travel and alternate dimensions. While today, things are a bit more vague, as stating it will "depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding."

We can only imagine that just like the early days of "The Dark Knight Rises," there will be plenty of speculation and guesswork, but either way, I think we can all agree that Nolan taking his ambition on a bigger scale is something to really look forward to. He'll spend the early part of the year as executive producer on his friend and cinematographer Wally Pfister's directorial debut "Transcendence," and of course there's "Man Of Steel" coming this summer. It sounds as if he's still putting things together for "Interstellar," and if he's doing more writing, then it might not be camera-ready just yet. But hopefully once his commitments to those two movies wrap up, this won't be too far behind.

The internet-nerd Nolan backlash started with Inception. TDKR's story flaws only exacerbated that. Whatever issues one has with the movie, it's by far Nolan's most compositionally interesting so far. Where his flicks have historically been kind of stiff and flat, TDKR is filled with powerful, enduring shots. He's growing as a visual storyteller, and I'm excited to see where he goes next.

Mainly Batman. Because I love The Prestige.

Looking back on all three films, I shouldn't discredit it too much. I watched those Batman & Robin clips earlier, and my god, that was some awful stuff, and I appreciate Nolan's fine stamp on the franchise.

But mainly I love the first hour of Batman Begins, from the opening credits to where he's standing on top a tall building looking over Gotham. I love snippets of The Dark Knight. The chase scene midway through the movie is one of the best action sequences in recent memory. I think the movie falls apart in the last half hour. And with TDKR, I only care for the first fight between Bane and Batman in the sewer.

I love ebb & flow in my movies, but I feel at times it gets sloppy in Nolan's batman. But I suppose it's bound to get choppy when you have so many ideas packed into an ambitious project.

I did. It was a hell of an original idea and no one was backing that movie more than I was before going into it. But I fell victum to too much hype. I was let down. And that snow sequence near the end of the movie was poor. It looked like it was pulled out of a mediocre Bond movie from the 90s.

I think The Bourne Ultimatum editor should work with Nolan.

This is supposed to be a hard science fiction movie right?

Im sure the movie will be great though.

Perhaps like Contact, but hopefully way the hell better.

the end of the prestige is so bad

i heard that the trailer is mostly scenes from the first 15-20 minutes of the movie, then things get weird.

I hope so..That there looked like Armageddon..all it was missing was bon jovi in the bckground

Yeah, that trailer was pretty bad, but I've yet to be disappointed by Nolan, so he gets the benefit of the doubt.
