well, I thought I knew everything about this song.

Untill I listened to this Andy Wood demo:

so the chords and bridge were written by Andy.... ;)

But it could be Stone playing guitar here...

Eh?

You're going to have to help me understand what you're saying, because I'm not really hearing it.

Well, the chords are almost identical. Especially in the verses, and check how each verse ends. Example around the 2:37 mark.....

The opening of "Black" always reminded me of the "opening" of The Who's "Water" (starts around :52)

Total agreement on Water.
Of their big hits Black's never been one of my favorites.

Black's sentiment is what lent the depth to what Pearl Jam was saying to me in my early-mid teens. It completed the circle. The angst of Alive coupled with this self-righteous/woe-is-me desperation provided a one-two punch of emotion that myself and millions of other entitled brats really connected with. Today the lyrics seem way over the top but they were perfect back then.
The song still kills live, two of my favorite and most memorable live PJ moments have been them jamming on this at Bridge shows (I'm thinking of 2001 and 2006).

Jeremy. But I didn't go full on Pearl Jam fanboy until Vitalogy.
Oh, wait, was that supposed to be rhetorical or sarcastic?

Jeremy is what got me to buy Ten, then - for some reason - Garden got me really hooked
