Adam and the Ants "Kings of the Wild Frontier" was my first ever album bought by me with my own cash. Old school LP style.

i remember my momz paying me to wash all the windows around the house...i used the money to buy a stereo and cd's...one was some radio rock hit at the time (hootie maybe? i don't quite remember)...the other was what i thought was a R.E.M. greatest hits album...turned out it was some guy playing acoustic instrumentals

On the same day, at age 13! I don't remember the records, or mp3s, but I absolutely remember buying those two CDs.

Re: What was the first cassette/vinyl/CD/MP3 you ever bought
My first record was a 45 of a kids' song called "Kitty Katoo Took a Canoe" -- I can't find anything online about the song but I can remember almost every word. I was probably 3 or 4.
My first cassette was "Fore" by Huey Lewis and the News (Huey was also my first concert, circa 1988 or so). I was about 5.
I didn't get a CD player until well into the mid-'90's, but I remember getting a portable RCA and REM's "Monster" on the same day. The next day I walked from school to Wal-Mart and bought what at age 12 I didn't realize was a censored version of "In Utero."
I'm pretty sure the first time I paid for mp3s was a few years ago -- a few rare 7" tracks from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's website.

Re: What was the first cassette/vinyl/CD/MP3 you ever bought
First CD was Third Eye Blind's self-titled, sometime in 1997.
I can also remember the last CD I bought with the intention of listening to it: Nine Inch Nails' "Year Zero," in 2007. Solid decade of CD buying! I went a solid 3-4 years of no CDs after that, and in the past 2-3 years, I've bought a few CDs to contribute to charity, but never listened to them.
LPs are harder to figure out. It might have been Magnolia Electric Co.'s "Josephine," which I bought at the one and only show of theirs that I went to. Got it at the merch table from bassist Pete Schreiner. Now I've got 550+ in my collection, waaaay more than I had CDs.

Re: What was the first cassette/vinyl/CD/MP3 you ever bought
The first cassette I remember buying for myself, may not be the first I owned, but the first I specifically went to the store for, was Aerosmith's Get A Grip.
For a CD it was Dookie.

Don't completely remember, but High 'N Dry was one of my first cassettes too, as was this:bada wrote:

I've never owned vinyl. My sister is 6 years older than I am and she had a great record collection in the early 80s. Listened to a lot of Adam and The Ants, The Who, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and of course, REO Speedwagon records.

Re: What was the first cassette/vinyl/CD/MP3 you ever bought
First store-bought vinyl was probably some kids music or something from the budget bin.
First store-bought cassette was "Then & Now...The Best Of The Monkees".
First store-bought CD was Aerosmith's "Pump".
First MP3 purchase was the first Frank Zappa Birthday Bundle on iTunes.
First bootleg purchase was Nirvana "Seattle Sound, Sounds Great" on CD.
