Master of None

Ansari’s character will be loosely based on himself.
Don’t expect Ansari’s character Dev to be a Tom Haverford redux. “He’s in his early 30s, he has good friends, and realizes, ‘Oh shit, I’m an adult now,’” Ansari says. “He has to figure out if he wants to get married, have kids.” There are elements of himself in Dev, but “he’s not exactly me,” Ansari adds, likening him to the lead characters in Woody Allen films who are Woody Allen proxies. “This show is like dumping my head and heart out,” Ansari continued. “We took care to slow it down a little, and make it a conversation. It’s not too jokey.”

Yang, who was a writer on Parks and Rec, says fans of that show will like Master of None even though “it’s different in tone and feel. It’s not as fast-paced. And it’s not a mockumentary.”

Netflix previously teased that it was working on a new original series with comedian Aziz Ansari and now we have more info, with Master of None set to drop on 6 November, 2015.

A play on the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none', the show will centre on Dev (Ansari), a directionless 30-year-old actor in New York "who has trouble deciding what he wants to eat, much less the pathway for the rest of his life".

Described by Netflix as "ambitious, funny, cinematic, and both sweeping in scope and intensely personal, Dev's story takes him through subjects as diverse as the plight of the elderly, the immigrant experience, and how to find the most delicious pasta for dinner."

Ansari co-created the series with Parks and Recreation writer Alan Yang, with both serving as executive produce alongside fellow Parks and Rec alumni Mike Schur, Louie's David Miner and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's David Miner.

Getting someone from Louie on board makes sense, given the obviously similarities between the premises of Master of None and Louis CK's FX show.

The series also stars H. Jon Benjamin, Eric Wareheim (from Tim and Eric!), Lena Waithe, Noel Wells and Kelvin Yu and is produced by Universal TV and 3 Arts for Netflix.

I thought the second season was better than the first. There were some pretty creative takes on what a 30 minute episode can be in this format. Oh, and Francesca is hot.

Agreed on all counts. Loved the concept and execution of several of the latter episodes in season 2.

I'm excited so far. I really dig the episode about "playing an Indian". Pretty brilliant stuff. I was also really moved by the story of his father in the second episode.

I love his parents are played by his actual parents (even if they are pretty bad actors).

I need to rewatch the first season. I remember loving it, but the characters and general plot line is super hazy to me. We watched it in the span of two days when it came out. This is my big problem with "binge-worthy" shows!

Sounds like the second season is the one that's really putting this show on the map for people.

Netflix shows in general are very forgettable. Don't know if it is because of the binge factor or because most of them are just ok to good. Very few are great.

The episode that cuts between different dates is so spot on. Immediately put me back in that place in my life.

If you're lumping Grace & Frankie into that good-not-great mix then you can just shut your dirty whore mouth, Driven. :gomez:

I like Grace and Frankie, but it's not great by any means.
