Movie: Straight Outta Compton

Just saw this. I was never into gangsta rap, but going through my teens during its height, I was aware of it. Despite not really knowing any of the music, I really enjoyed it. Here are a few thoughts:

Ice Cube's kid looks remarkably like him, but more remarkably like Daya from Orange is the New Black.
They made it seems like Snoop took a shit and then just walked into the room and freestyled Nuthin But a G Thang.
It's crazy how different people's lives are from mine in the same country. I mean, a kid threw up on my bus, but that was about as real as shit ever got on the way to school.
I am probably going to download their album on the strength of how the music sounded in this movie.
Bye, Felicia!

I always thought MC Wren was undervalued from that group. He had the skills to pay the bills.

Yes. Stupid phone. I kind of can't believe anybody buys the phony tabloid bullshit in this movie.

Sure, the narrative is. But it's a completely surface level depiction of it that is hilariously unwilling to be at all critical of anything. It ignores any kind of substantive inquiry for the sake of manipulative tabloid melodrama, lionizing its heroes, and hustling topicality.

I hope one day to be rich enough to produce my own hagiography. I promise to be fair and balanced.

Yeah, it was fun. I never for a second thought, "I wonder if this is all precise." Fuck, man. It was fun. You need to listen to a B-52s record or something. Shake your ass a little.

Sigh. Not the old "just relax and stop thinking" argument. And I never even said anything about it having to be "precise;" that's not the problem.

You don't have to "Sigh." At this point it's kind of implied when it comes to movies. ;)
And no, I wasn't making the old relax and stop thinking argument. But what am I supposed to think about? How deep do I have to go? I went with another approaching middle age white guy (we're both high school teachers), and we had a lot to think/talk about. I won't list our discussion points here, but they seemed legitimate at 12:30 last night.

This is off topic, friend, but I'll tell you one thing that we talked about the most. We went to a 10 pm showing for the specific reason that we could put our kids to bed first. I have an 8 and 5 year old. He's got a 7, 5, and 3 year old. When we got into the theater, there were two couples, one dude, and a pack of teenagers. Everyone was white. At 10:20, as the previews were winding down, a black family came in :a mom, a dad, another dude (presumably dad's buddy) and 2 girls who looked to be 6 and 7. As teachers in a metropolitan area, one thing we often talk about is the shit our kids bring to class with them. How were those kids in Compton ever expected to hit the books with all that chaos in their lives? Similarly, what kind of shot do two little girls whose parents think it's a good idea to expose them to that level of sex, violence, and profanity after 10pm have? This is no holier than thou shit, by the way. I work at a good school. We spend a lot of time talking about how to close the achievement gap. The deck is just so fucking stacked against some of these kids, it's impossible not to be angry, frustrated, and just flat out sad and depressed.

So anyway, I get, for example, that Dre wasn't as innocent and pure as the movie portrayed him. I get that everyone didn't put aside their differences miraculously just before Eazy E died. I just don't see the problem with sensationalizing different aspects of the story for an audience to not feel like shit when they leave a theater. For a movie in the summer without superheroes, dinosaurs, or 3d animation. I thought it was very entertaining.
