I like Bieber, Ruddo -- I don't think his artistic vision is as fleshed out as Kanye's or Taylor Swift's, but there is a certain loose-limbed insouciance to his singing that I think is unique to contemporary R&B singers -- as is common in his genre, he has a tendency to overemote a bit, favoring vocal gymnastics over really getting to the root of the melody, the harmony, etc., but it comes off as effortless and slick rather than contrived, with pleasing melodic contours and and a depth of emotion that belies his young age. I think he draws on R&B tradition (Jackson 5, Temptations, etc.) in a way that isn't necessarily readily apparent in his presentation, as the hearts of his performances are -- like Miley's -- often shrouded in excessive glitz and fireworks, but in the end I think he has a few big statements in him -- I predict he causes at least one big shift a la "Dark Twisted Fantasy" before his number is up.
