A thread for Canada's greatest band. Latest news is that Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins are inducting them into the Rock N' Roll HOF.

Which Rush albums do I need? I'm sure the answer isn't "all of them," so help me out, guys!

My top 5 are: Moving Pictures, Clockwork Angels, Permanent Waves, 2112, Hemispheres

Rush in Rio would be an excellent introduction.

The Chronicles compilation is a good place to start.

For some reason, I goddamn love Signals. But that's not really the best place to start. Moving Pictures is sort of THE album, yaknow?

I was in NW DC this afternoon, and stopped off to browse through a local store. Bought a 45 and a couple 7"s. I had been checking out the Remastered Vapor Trails set, but passed. A little while later, when the dude rang me up? $21.12.

8-)

A couple weeks ago Neil Peart said he was retiring. Alex has had health issues too, but Geddy wants to keep going. Hard to fathom one of the greatest rock drummers ever hanging it up completely. Hopefully they'll still do a few shows here and there.

Wish I would have gone to see them on their last tour. Rush has been an acquired taste for me. There was a certain "cheesiness" that I got from them that I get from a lot of "prog rock" bands. But at some point, the song structures and Peart's drumming really pulled me in. Their lyrics are probably the thing holding them back for me. Some are good and some are just god fucking awful. When you dabble in the themes that Peart tends to deal with, there's a fine line between compelling and cheap pretentiousness.

There was a video years back of Neil dealing with those accusations where he simply said he was pretending at all, about anything.

I was out in LA for their last show, but didn't realize it was the end of the tour. Should have gone.

I can still listen to their greatest hits like 2112, but can't get into any album all that much before the early 90s. Roll The Bones, Counterparts, Test For Echo, and all that came after are where its at for me. They found a nice balance of acoustic and electric sounds on their last few albums. Solid stuff.

This sentence doesn't make any sense. What does "he was pretending at all, about anything" mean?

Typo. My bad.

I remember him saying that Rush had been accused of being a pretentious band, but he felt that wasn't fair, that he wasn't pretending and that his lyrics and the music were heartfelt and sincere.

Ok, now I understand. Thanks for clearing that up. I've never gotten the impression that they were insincere, and the lyrical content doesn't bother me at all. Actually I quite like that Rush is a unique band in almost all aspects, including the lyrics.

Just finished mowing. Sitting out on the front porch. Doing a little RMing before diving into the evening chores and supper. The dude across the street is fucking jamming on drums. Can’t hear any other music, just him on drums. And just by that, I recognize he’s playing Tom Sawyer.
