The Flaming Lips: The Terror (April 2nd, 2013)

The Flaming Lips will release their thirteenth studio album titled, The Terror, on April 2nd in the US and April 1st in Europe.

It is comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works, along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect — but then again, maybe not. It’s up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you.

Wayne Coyne explains, “Why would we make this music that is The Terror — this bleak, disturbing record? I don’t really want to know the answer that I think is coming. Maybe this is the beginning of the answer.”

The Terror is a bold and expressive journey that has evolved over The Lips’ nearly 30-year tended garden of sonic delights that ebbs and flows with extraordinary splashes of darkness and light, pleasure and pain, chaos and order. As we’ve come to know The Flaming Lips, the real beauty lies with the knowledge that to expect the unexpected is all part of the manic fun.

“If we have love, give love and know love,” Coyne says, “we are truly alive and if there is no love, there would be no life. The Terror, we know now, that even without love, life goes on…we just go on…There is no mercy killing.”

The digital pre-order of The Terror will begin on Jan 29th, through the iTunes Store and other participating digital retailers. All pre-orders on iTunes will include an Instant gratification, Non-Album, Bonus Track titled, “Sun Blows Up Today.”

Sun Blows Up Today” is also the music bed for a very cool Hyundai TV commercial by INNOCEAN USA which also stars The Flaming Lips and will air during the Super Bowl on Feb 3rd.

i enjoyed embryonic, but i like the 'style' of SB/Yoshimi better. to me, embryonic was produced with too much distortion / clipping. so if this new album is more in the orchestral / synth style of the previous big three, then i'll love it, but i'm sure it'll be good either way.

As interesting as Embryonic is it's a pretty tough listen. If they keep mining that mind-space but make it a little more tuneful I'm very interested in this record.

Keen to hear this.

Songs that undeniably ruled from Embryonic: Hex, See The Leaves, Worm Mountain, Silver Trembling Hands

Embryonic was the first Flaming Lips album I really, really liked, so I'll check this out.

Sparrow Looks Up.

It's definitely a German food kind of music, though. It's almost punishingly thick and three bites in you've eaten a meal.

Those Coyne quotes about the new album have the surrealist tint of badly translated foreign language text.

My first unchaperoned concert was a triple bill with Rob Rule, The Flaming Lips and Candlebox.

One of them totally owned the evening.

I'm in the same boat, KD. The true irony is that, while Mystics felt like a step back from whatever sonic experiments that I felt like the Lips had spent a decade perfecting, Embryonic came around with all of its free form weirdness and I missed it. By the time I had heard Heady Fwends playing over the record store speakers, I barely recognized the band. A large part of me really wants get back into the band's discography. Apparently I missed a lot in the last five or six years.

Here is something recent they've done that I kinda dug. This song was really awesome live when I saw them last August.....studio version sounds flat to me though.

^Drug Chart is fucking killer. The Terror leaked. It sounds like Steven Drozd is chasing dragons again. It's pretty disturbing and sounds like mental illness in musical form. I love it.
