A thread dedicated to my first spin. Have we talked about this quintet before? Does this record have any staying power?

For me it definitely has staying power, its my #1 for 2012. It took me a couple of listens to really get into all of the songs, it has a few that grab you right off, but give it a little time and hopefully you will love it as much as i do. And if you can, grab their song "always alright " from the silver linings playback soundtrack, its another nice one.
Last, if you get the chance to see them live, do it, that's when i really fell in love with them, Brittany has so much energy up there on stage

Yes. No.

I like it. It's pretty easy listening in a Tom Petty sorta way.

I liked this album... having never seen what the band looks like, who they are, where they're from.
I heard they were on SNL this past week so I wanted to check em out.
First of all, I had NO IDEA the singer was a woman. Literally, no idea.
Secondly, my girlfriend and I pissed our pants laughing at the faces she makes while she sings. I'm not being mean, we just had a good laugh...
It really shouldn't interfere with the enjoyment of music, but it's pretty funny!

Yes. No.
Gave it quite a few spins when I got it and it was out of rotation fairly quick. Saw them open for Jack White and didn't even find myself tossing the album back in, which often happens after a gig. There just isn't much there to get excited about, singles were fun but the album as a whole was pretty lackluster.

Alabama Shakes: the new band for people who care more about yowling than songs.

really enjoyed them on SNL (first song only) then listened to the album and couldn't make it through...next
jorge's post made me laugh.
RM needs a "like" or "favorite" function to let the author know we enjoyed the post without actually having to post and say so.

My wife had no idea until she saw SNL too. She thought it was a young, skinny white hipster dude.
She's now fully convinced that the singer is transgendered.

Glad to see I'm not alone. I totally thought it was going to be a hipster dude.
My girlfriend too was convinced that the singer is a man-woman... I think she could just be a strange looking woman.

That's first time I had heard of them and yeah, that kind of turned me off the music.

Yeah totally. A black woman in a rock band!? This just won't do!
Anyway I liked it, and yeah, it doesn't have much staying power, but I am interested in what they come up with next.

I thought this was a good start for them. I would hope that the next album would be an improvement...I think they would sound better with rawer production than this.

I find myself constantly going back to this album. I like it a lot.
I also would have bet anything that the singer was a skinny, greasy little southern dude, but I was very impressed with the SNL performances even though watching that woman sing was very distracting.

So I first heard the album and I really enjoyed it. Then it kind of died on me and felt over hyped..... Hold on is obviously a great tune.... but the rest was kind of....just fine...
I just watched the SNL performance and I need to revisit the album. That chicks voice is insanely beautiful and powerful. They seem to have tightened up quit ea bit too. Seem to be a better band all around.
Damn near sent chills down my spine hearing her belt that out.
Yea, she also looks ridiculous, but whatever it takes to belt that voice out...
Good shit.
