i still enjoy the first two albums a great deal...so if just one other person can step up and confess their enjoyment of the shins we can prove tommy wrong

Let's prove him wrong -- the Shins are great (though their last one didn't do much for me).

The first two albums were near-perfect -- just glorious pop music, fun and heartfelt and super-melodic. I liked the third album less, but it still has 5-6 really good songs. I could probably stand to give "Port of Morrow" another chance -- I played it once or twice and kind of dismissed
it.

completely agreed and i did the same with port of morrow

i think i preferred oh, inverted world to chutes too narrow, though not by a large margin...seemed like most people were the opposite

Yeah, there ain't nothing wrong with The Shins. Can I name more than 5-6 songs of theirs? Probably not. But they've got a pleasant soundscape that's good to throw on the table if you're looking for something poppy.

I liked their first three albums a lot.

"New Slang" remains one of my favorite tracks of the past 20 years.

"Oh, Inverted World" stands as the stronger album in my mind but for some reason I've found myself revisiting "Chutes" more often -- sometimes I get the itch to hear "Saint Simon" or "Pink Bullets" or "Gone For Good" and nothing else will do.

"Chutes" is a great example of how to make a pop album sound squeaky-clean and accessible but still very immediate and "real."

I like the shins. Their last one was hit and miss, but there are a couple of good ones on there.
