Let's revisit 2006

Before tackling 2012's year-end list i got to thinking about how those rankings really only reflect your mood on that day or week when you draw up your rankings. feelings change, especially with a few months or years to reflect on and absorb new material. Things that you loved at the time no longer seem relevant. So i thought it would be interesting to revisit my rankings from 2006 and see how i would rank that year in music today. I went into my mp3 folder and searched 2006 (i put the release year on all album folders) and drew up a list and then tracked down my 2006 rankings for a comparison.
if anyone else feels like taking part, here is the album voting thread from 2006:

2. Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
3. Tool – 10,000 Days
4. Boris - Pink
5. Lamb of God - Sacrament
6. Mars Volta - Amputechture
7. NOFX - Wolves In Wolves Clothing
8. The Sword - Age Of Winters
9. Horse Feathers - Words Are Dead
10. Agalloch - Ashes Against The Grain
11. Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal

24. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
25. Melvins - A Senile Animal
26. Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing And A Curse
27. Slayer - Christ Illusion
28. Vader - Impressions in Blood
29. Rise Against - The Sufferer and the Witness
30. Probot - Probot
I'm struck by a few immediate conclusions. a lot of my highest ranking favorites are still my favorites today. obviously there were some new discoveries since then. i got hooked on Boris and Gojira most notably. i'm also surprised at how little i really LOVED from 2006. it must have been kind of a shitty year i guess. especially for metal.

they sure turned into something terrible. i loved them back in the late 90's early 2000's. admittedly they weren't for everybody though. but that album on my 2006 list is fucking garbage. i'm embarrassed by it.

Everything before a crow left of the murder was really good, there are a couple of decent songs on crow, and i haven't heard anything worth listening to again since

Weren't Incubus's first few albums just more of that aggro-nu-metal-funk that was popular at the time? They're not a band that's aged well at all for me.
Top ten from 2006? With a little hindsight? Why not:
1. Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
2. Ghostface Killah - Fishscale
3. Bob Dylan - Modern Times
4. Nas - Hip Hop is Dead
5. Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, and Paul Motian - S/T
6. Brad Mehldau Trio - House on Hill
7. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go
8. TV On the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
9. Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
10. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Honorable mentions:
Calexico - Garden Ruin
Bruce Springsteen - We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
Mogwai - Mr. Beast
Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint - The River in Reverse
And what the hell, I liked S/T too.
Oh, and if Orphans counts, that's my #1.

To me the most mindblowing moment in that old 2006 thread was learning that Stip is a Tool fan.

It was around late 2006, early 2007 that I started to really pay attention to music outside of the same few bands I was listening to, thanks to both Pearl Jam and Green Day releasing terrible albums that year. I probably didn't have any best-of list back then and chances are I didn't find out about most of my 2006 favorites until 2007 or even way later for some of them.
Here's what that list would look like today:
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
(those three would definitely be on a decade best-of as far as I'm concerned)
Built to Spill - You in Reverse
Current 93 - Black Ships Ate The Sky
Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadems of 12 Stars
Contemporary Noise Quintet - Pig Inside the Gentleman
The Black Keys - Magic Potion
Espers - II
Murder by Death - In Bocca Al Lupo
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go
Russian Circles - Enter
Cold War Kids - Robbers & Cowards
Crime in Choir - Trumpery Metier
James Blackshaw - O True Believers
Since I don't put year tags on every file it's likely I'm missing some stuff

.
First 2 mostly were, the next 2 were more then that, the were still nu metalish at times but they moved away from that some and that is when i started to like them the most, then either i got over them quick or they changed enough i didn't like them anymore

It's been about 4 or 5 years since I listened to it, but i remember Avocado being the most consistent album of decent songs since Yield. I think it deserves more love.
Backspacer on the other hand...

Incubus's only point of interest is Mike Einziger, a potentially interesting guitarist who deserved a better medium and a better singer. But I still think the net worth of their sound is still pretty much the same as all the other crap that was on the radio back then.

Acoustic Summer Romance always seemed pretty interesting. Of course I haven't listened to it in years.
