These are two great songs. Sponge has an awesome nails on a chalkboard heaviness to it, angry and brooding and not to be trifled with. A great reminder of how REM was capable of these heavy huge songs you wouldn't associate with the band that released Automatic for the People a few years earlier.


But We All Go Back to Where We Belong is about as perfect a farewell song as you could imagine. Hallelujah technically comes one track later on the final release, but this is their goodbye, and it is lovely and sappy and wistful and bittersweet, but it has no regrets. And that just about sums it up.

the story behind that video is that Stipe and Kirsten Dunst live in the same building in NYC and he just cornered her to play her the song and film her reaction.

I will go with Sponge.

Sponge is pretty kick ass, but there's some sentimental value to "We All Go Back" that makes me vote for it. It really is the perfect goodbye song.

I don't think I had heard Sponge before - it made me happy to have some 'new' R.E.M.

I don't care that much for heavy R.E.M.

We All Go Back To Where We Belong is really good.

This have happened to me with many non album tracks so far.

I've never heard Sponge before; that is GREAT.

I think I'll still go with We All Go Back to Where We Belong, but it could just be it's had longer to sit with me. Sponge is a wonderful find, and reminds me that I'm still relatively ignorant of R.E.M.'s b-sides and oddities.
