I like Exhuming McCarthy, but the heights on Document are so high the songs that are merely good feel like they are less.
I adore Lotus, but I'll always kind of resent the studio version for its affected weirdness. The clean live versions are so much better.

for instance--basically superior to the studio version in almost every way, plus it has Michael Stipe doing his Michael Stipe dancing

God, I was so annoyed with the Up version of Lotus after getting used to that live version.

I like Exhuming McCarthy alot, but upon listening Lotus is a really demented cool pop song.

This is a tough one for me. "McCarthy" is relentlessly catchy, and Mike Mills's "sign of the times" backing vox are just the millionth example of why he was about the best "second lead singer" in the business. But after some back and forth I gave it to "Lotus" -- in the end I think it's just the better song.

McCarthy was alright, but damn, Lotus was awesome.

I like both, and Exhuming McCarthy sounds like quintessential early REM, but I like the vibe of Lotus more.
