"The Wrong Child" is gut-wrenching, but I've always found it kind of awkward to listen to, and is one of the few REM songs where I find Stipe's vocal performance kind of whiny and emo-ish. "Driver 8" is undeniable -- a pivotal track on one of my favorite albums.

driver 8 is an undisputed classic for good reason. its a perfect song.

the wrong child is the weakest song on Green and feels like its trying too hard next to the more restrained hairshirt and sublime you are the everything

KD, i agree the idea behind wrong child is powerful - but it calls for a more restrained performance to highlight how sad the story is

that is just echoing your post, not challenging it

Very much so -- I think what I mean by "emo-ish" is that he sounds like he's trying to build more drama than is necessary into the vocal performance, when the story says enough. His over-enunciating is just so grating -- it makes me think of Something Corporate or Dashboard Confessional or something.
