Orange Crush gets lucky here. Good riff and a pretty good song, though I've always found it overrated. But the Apologist is one of the few REM songs I flat out dislike.

I voted apologist. Maybe cause I knew it wouldn't win.

Something I've realized as a result of this tournament is how dependent the "Up" songs are on being in each other's company, as part of the sustained mood the album creates. It's a textbook example of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts -- I've probably voted against half of its tracks so far, though at no point do I feel like the songs I'm voting against ought to be "better" in some way. They're just meant for their own world.

Vote for "Orange Crush."

Having said that, The Apologist is one of those examples of an inferior song, right?

"Orange Crush" is one of those songs that I loved when I first got into R.E.M., but I noticed recently that it has way more Skips on my iPod than I would have imagined.

Having said that, Garbage's uncredited sampling of the opening on "Stupid Girl" was pretty perfect.

Admittedly, it's hard for me to vote for anything on Up. Can't remember if I said this in "Lotus"'s last round, but I would have loved if they'd finished overthinking the album in the studio, threw it away, recorded it live in one take, and released that instead. (Honestly, I'd probably say the same thing about Reveal and Around the Sun.)

It's not among Up's stronger tracks, no -- and I can see how the repetition in the chorus might get a bit irksome. But again, when I'm locked into the vibe of the album, those things don't really bother me about it.

it's a fair complaint. Reveal is the only one of those records where I think the tinkering enhances the song. I would probably prefer most of the core songs on Up stripped down

The Apologist is a great song but Orange crush is one of their all time best.

"The One I Love" and "Orange Crush" are two widely beloved REM songs on this round that do nothing for me.
