Pretty Persuasion takes all the base elements of Reckoning but fails to do anything really interesting with it. Try Not to Breathe is exceptional. The fact that half of Automatic may be better only speaks to the depth of that album

Yeah, "Pretty Persuasion" rocks, but this one goes to "Breathe" easily -- a marvelous song full of wonderful singing and compelling melodic turns.

I'm a little surprised to see "Pretty Persuasion" not be more popular. That bridge and the return of the intro riff, where it sounds like the song is about to go off the rails, is one of my favorite moments of any R.E.M. song.
