I disagree. I would write a letter in support of my kid. Asking for leniency b/c of his potential and past behavior, but saying he's paid too steep a price b/c he only fingered the girl for 20 minutes is ridiculous.

Is Judge Aaron Persky’s decision ethically reprehensible? No. Not at all.
A male (human or other) will always seek to impose his sexual will onto the female. The only thing stopping him from doing that, are other males, often because they want to impose it themselves.
The laws of nature insist that females themselves are not capable of preventing a male from imposing his will onto them. Therefore, if no other males are around to prevent it, this male behaviour is entirely legitimate. The solution is that the female shall avoid situations in which no other males would be around to protect her.
The alternative would be to attempt to shut down the desire of the male to invariably impose his will onto the female. This cannot be done, because this would shut down the core-most component of the biological mechanism of reproduction itself.
There are indeed males who would agree to attempt to fix this core biological mechanism, but these males are therefore also, in terms of the laws of nature, entirely legitimate extermination targets.
You may certainly lament the way in which the laws of nature work, but you cannot prevent these laws from being imposed onto you.
