Recommend me some great French films. I've only seen Amelie. Which is just outstanding. What am I missing? What are some of the best, must-see films of the French cinema?

I'm looking for subtitled films.

You can get some great nudity in european films but especially french ones.
Of course there's a fair chance there's going to be dick too.

There's an entire internet just brimming with porn. You know that, right?

My experience with this was so surreal. I kept falling in and out of sleep during class, and doing that with this movie always made it feel like you were dreaming.

Just as well too, because I don't think I knew what was going on anyway.

I rented that one on a whim and loved it. I was not aware that there were more films featuring him, but now I'll make a note to check them out.

Yeah, that was a half hearted attempt to be that guy. I actually do have an appreciation of european films largely because of IFC. Which was so much better before they starting slicing up the movies with commercials.
If you liked Audrey Tautou check out A Very Long Engagement. I also liked Strayed (Les Egares), which stars one of her co-stars from that.
If you liked The Descent there's a similiar french film High Lane (Vertige).
L'Ecole is beautifully shot but not always a comfortable watch.
And if you do want a french movie with unnecessary nudity check out Desire. Ma Mere has plenty of nudity too but carries a little more weight.
Oh yeah, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly is excellent. It's one that will stay with you a little while.

This is great, guys. Thanks! I've added about 10 films to my Netflix queue. Looking forward to this journey.

Thanks for that. It's Belgian indeed. We also have the Dardenne brothers, who make movies in French and have often won awards at Cannes. Best are:

Rosetta
L'Enfant
Le Gamin Au Velo
Le Silence de Lorna

Other movies in French I particularly enjoyed:

Entre les Murs
Jeu d'enfants
Un long dimanche de fiançailles
Bienvenue chez les chtis
L'auberge espagnole

me too. It makes our little corner of the internet very special.
Of course I would double up on a bunch of the previous mentions, but some great ones not yet mentioned:
