There is Freedom Within - A thread for all things Neil Finn

One of the most criminally underrated bands in the history of music (outside of Aus/NZ of course), Crowded House, has just released Deluxe Editions of each of their 7 albums (including their rarities collection 'Afterglow').

Image

The band's archivist and arguably biggest fan, Jeremy Ansell, has spent over a decade trawling through the band's vaults in consultation with Neil Finn to produce a collection of over 100 insightful demos, outtakes, and other live and studio bits and pieces.

Pearl Jam would do well to learn a bit from their 'other Uncle Neil' - these deluxe packages are FANTASTIC (and reasonably priced to boot), showing a real insight into the songwriting process of the man Paul McCartney once called the world's greatest living songwriter.

Given the plethora of live material the band has put out over the years, the sets focus mostly on home and studio demos, but also feature unheard b-sides, 'work-in-progress' live takes, and some great fly-on-the-wall studio outtakes including songwriting banter between Neil, the band and their producer.

The albums themselves have also been remastered from original tapes (and are being re-released on vinyl too), and from what I've heard so far buck the modern trend of brickwalling the shit of out everything :nice:

Anyone with even a passing interest in Neil should at the very least give the Woodface and Together Alone albums (and bonus discs) a listen - they're all up on spotify now

Anyone with a significant interest should check out this article up on superdeluxeedition.com:

Looking forward to digesting these releases. Crowded House is criminally underrated in North America. The songs that connect are absolutely sublime. For me it's the first album and Together Alone that are my faves.

Together Alone reminds me as being their Binaural but done better and easier to digest. It is a dream to listen to on headphones.

Yep - Together Alone would be in my top 10 albums of all time. The musicianship and song-craftsmanship are simply sublime :heartbeat:

Off to the Sydney Opera House Forecourt tonight to see Crowded House reprise their famous 'Farewell to the World' concert 20 years on - one of the most amazing and culturally significant music events in Australasian history.

The fourth and final night of the Opera House shows will be broadcast on Sunday evening on ABCTV and iView (which I think non-Aussies can view online):

Crowded House and Neil Finn in general is wildly over-rated - especially over here

:(

Overplayed perhaps, but I strongly disagree Rangi.

I do agree that some of the 'hits' like Weather With You and Something So Strong are over-rated - many of Neil's best songs were never chart-toppers.

Trag gets it :nice:

I saw the Finn Brothers play Royal Albert Hall on the Everyone Is Here tour the day after Paul Hester committed suicide. The emotion in the room was almost too much, but they put on a fine and memorable performance.

Neil Finn wrote:Every Friday in August at 7pm NZT / 5pm AEST, I will be performing on a live stream from my studio in Auckland. During these Friday sessions you will be witness to a series of musical happenings featuring friends, family, fellow songwriters and singers playing tunes both old and brand new. You can follow the progress of new song arrangements as we build towards the last stream on August 25. This final performance will be the actual recording of my new solo album.
His new album "Out Of Silence" will be mixed, mastered and released on the following Friday September 1st.

I sometimes listen to this album. It's very soothing. Songs about life that makes you think, but not weep.
