durdencommatyler wrote:Argo, you know me well enough at this point. You've seen where we agree and disagree on films. Would you curate a list of films for me? I'd love for you to custom make me a list of 8 films that you think I need to see, that I will enjoy, and that could potentially end up on my all-time best/favorite list in the future.

Is that something you think you could do?
I'm really trying to tailor this list to d,t. The stereotype of d,t is basically a :luv: smiley come to life, but we all know that he's more complicated than that. Guy can be downright dark and terrifying sometimes. Most importantly in my thinking for this list, Joey is a creative, intelligent dude who's always looking for inspiration. I did some RM searches and picked movies that he hadn't posted about before, so hopefully these will be heretofore unseen by d,t. So....8 movies for d,t: a curated list.

# 1 with a bullet: Ikiru (Kurosawa, 1952): Ikiru means "to live" and that's exactly what this movie will teach you how to do. It's the story of an aging, lifeless middle-management bureaucrat who finally decides to live with some purpose. The last time I watched this one, a few months ago, it took me two sittings to finish it. Not because it's a difficult watch, but because it got my mojo going so much I had to pause it halfway through to go do some writing. I started writing a play, for eff's sake. No idea why. Just that kind of movie.

#2: A Woman Under the Influence (Cassavettes, 1974): Joey is a sucker for a good female performance, and this has the best one of all time. Gena Rowlands as a housewife in the midst of a breakdown is IMO un-beatable. Peter Falk as her working-class husband puts in his best work as well, and the result is a beautiful picture of a marriage and what feels like a real world.

#3: Ghost World (Zwigoff, 2001): All the different ways to be, or not be, a freak.

#4: Castaway on the Moon (Hae-jun Lee, 2009): A movie about loneliness and love.

#5: Jackie Brown (Tarantino, 1997): d,t said about a year ago that he had not seen this one. Is this Tarantino's finest? Perhaps...

#6: Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About his Father (Kuenne, 2008): It's best to go into this movie knowing as little about it as possible. All I'll say is that it is a documentary and that I cry my dick off every time I watch it.

#7: Bigger Than Life (Ray, 1956): A damn fine story that gets to some pretty intense places, especially for 1956.

#8: Two Days, One Night (Dardenne, 2014): I could recommend just about anything by the Dardenne brothers, but this one has the added bonus of a phenomenal performance by Marion Cotillard (whom I think Joey is fond of).

I mean the writing is incredible so it's easy to understand how it would inspire someone to write.

But...then...how...
I based my assessment on your brief description of each movie and found compatibility levels HIGH.

To be fair, you put way more effort into this one than you did the others.

Outstanding work here, Argo. Thank you for this. I'll comment further soon when I have more time. This is awesome.

Okay, so you nailed the heart of the exercise, Argo. Thank you so much. I have seen Ghost World, which I absolutely love. So, in honor of you and the effort you put into this, I'm going to change out Ghost World for Pierrot le Fou. I believe you love that film and I've never seen it.

I'm going to start with #1 on your list and go in order. I'll report back as I view each one of them.

It's really a shame you two were enemies for so long. You're made for each other.
