I like Golden state quite a bit (both versions), and is exactly the kind of unpolished song I wish we got more of on the holiday singles.
Only Cloud in the Sky is okay. A meandering idea that is pleasent enough, but drags over the length of the instrumental. There was no need to turn this into a song.
SOLAT, for all its raging melodrama, is still awesome. Eddie was just able to pull this off that it never rings false or feels silly, despite the fact that, 20 years late, it kind of is.

SOLAT, easily, but Only Cloud in the Sky is actually a really enjoyable instrumental.

But I will say, Ed's version of Golden State with Natalie Maines sets my heart on fire.

A couple R1 featherweights vs a powerhouse.
SOLAT has reached the quarter finals twice (losing against Porch in 2007, and Do the Evolution in 2009), semifinals once (losing against Alive in 2008).
In the years since 2009, its stock has fallen a bit, and it hasn't managed to claw its way out of R4 - are the denizens of RM down on this energetic classic?

I'm really surprised it hasn't gone further (farther?). Feel like it's biding its time until favor comes back (Barack?) around.

not that it matters, because cmon, SOLAT, but is this the golden state with the dixie chick? i have a live recording of that and listen to it all the time. love the john doe/kathleen edwards version too.
