Both are among my favorite "Ten" songs, but "Oceans" is just a bit stronger compositionally -- a more dynamic, more musical relationship between the melody and the chords, where "Release" is a gradual droning crescendo that is more purely emotional. In an era where composition regularly took a back seat to that drifting, verse-atop-riff writing style, "Oceans" stands out as an accomplished piece of songcraft in the traditional sense -- a piece of music first, a vehicle for other things second.

Seeing this at Wrigley last summer was magical -- one of my few PJ white whales over the years.

SoH had always been second but I finally realized/admitted it was my favorite. I just think it is PJs masterpiece, and I love everything about it. Release really never fell in my estimation, it was just barely passed by the perfect song.
