Yep

Daughter is really, really, really good. Especially if you try to remember what it was like to first hear it on the radio.

But Animal is Animal.

Ah man all of these songs this round are absolutely essential 5 star tracks. Intense and rocking even when creating a mood.

Animal as it was my third favourite favourite song. I love Dave A and Stone so much.

Animal is amazing and does whatever the fuck Go was trying to do way better.
But Daughter is the superior song, I'll vote for it.

Animal, but it's like the difference between a 5.0 vs. a 4.9.

That 0.1 is because I think Daughter took a big hit in the live setting once Dave A. left. His sense of playful bounciness added so much to that song, and really brought Stone's strumming to life. It was always a real groovy performance. Jack's more brash approach brought the energy down a fair bit, and then Matt's heavy-handedness has really altered that song into a harder folk number.

Conversely, Animal was still great fun through the Irons years, and Matt's approach, while harder and less dynamic, hasn't totally altered the song; the band still turns in a similar performance. So it has had a bit of a longer shelf life for me, even if the studio cuts are both 5.0 songs.

Good point about what Mr. Abbbbrrruzzzzzessse adds to the song. Takes it to another level.

Animal sits in this class of Pearl Jam songs that I don't really have a name for, and if I'd try to describe it, it'd be something like "those songs that are really short and sort of simple structurally but still manage to hit you like a ton of bricks; oh, also, they're fast." Hail Hail and Last Exit are also in this category, and while I think HH may be my favorite of the bunch, Animal is just a song that still, to this day, is filled with a lot of raw energy. Daughter isn't really in the top of any of my lists for the categories it'd fall into--not of acoustic-driven songs, not of slightly-anthemic songs--and I think the whole tag-thing lost steam sometime towards the end of the last decade (I'd be perfectly fine with them just playing the standard song from now on). So Animal for me.
