My buddies and I in high school would always cover the first, like, minute of Outshined then it got too complicated and so we'd move on to PJ songs.

I always think of that change from the dark, heavy verse riff into the open, soaring pre-chorus as the template for what feels like hundreds of bands I heard practicing from their 12' x 12' jam rooms at the rehearsal facility in Salem, MA. If I close my eyes when I listen, I can smell that distinct mixture of the amp tubes, cigarettes, Natty Light and testosterone.
