So, what exactly is mead? I know the gods would drink it. Is it just beer with honey in it?

No it's fermented honey and water. Usually with different fruits or spices. Lots of different varieties out there, and new meaderies popping up all the time

I describe it to guests as the sweet & thick love child of the fruity cider they're drinking and a dessert wine.

That's accurate. Although lately I've been exploring some made with some spices that cut down on the sweetness. Coriander was a good one
