But I think the diversity is a big part of the Fast and Furious franchise's appeal. Those movies are fun for what they are, but they are utterly insipid. But it's a diverse insipidity!

Lets keep our fingers crossed for Rogue One. Otherwise Disney will be stuck with only 3 billion dollar movies this year.

The franchise movies seem to be getting worse as they go along though. This is star treks third consecutive drop in opening weekend numbers l. Lowest of them all. And the DC and marvel movies seem to be becoming poorer quality as they go along. Marvel proliferating seems counterproductive. Do we really need Antman in a standalone movie? Or the Tick? Hardly.

Franchise fatigue is definitely setting in with audiences. It'll even happen with Star Wars eventually, thanks to the stand alones.

The Tick isn't Marvel, and two of marvel's last three movies grossed over a billion dollars, and their most recent was one of their most critically acclaimed to boot. All these larger issues really seem to impact every group that isn't marvel. It will be interesting to see if they remain bulletproof to what does seem to be some audience fatigue. Maybe most of the summer blockbusters this year have been shitty movies, but the only one that was categorically successful was Civil War

Uh, Marvel's latest outing, Civil War, was awesome!!! Didn't see any negative reviews on it, either.

If it does, I see it happening way down the line. They're being smart in that they are still giving the main storyline Episodes to go back to. The only thing I can see hurting the brand is the standalones start sucking. If they put out a couple of those that turn out to be stinkers, it'll happen sooner.

I see little to no evidence that franchise fatigue is affecting the general public whatsoever, at least when it comes to Marvel or Star Wars. Or Fast & Furious.

But keep in mind as it pertains to Trek, Into Darkness made a killing internationally. It ended up being the highest grossing film in that franchise's history and it was the 14th highest grossing film of 2013 worldwide (11th in North America).

That was my only point. Hollywood has to stop thinking of the international market as the secondary market.

The calculations are tricky, since the return on international box office is different than in the states (I think). I know in China studios only recoup a fraction of the money

No but it is worth noting, for sure. That's one out of many, many, many, many reasons why Hollywood hasn't cared much about international grosses. They've basically seen that as pure profit. Money on top of money. They make their nut back in the US and then the worldwide numbers are just caviar.

I see that changing a lot in the near future. But that will mean negotiations and new contracts and distribution deals and on and on and on. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
