Revisiting their entire catalog (through the pod, sure, but as a listener, too) has revealed so many things to me. Chief among those realizations is the true and full impact that Losing My Religion had on me as a young listener. Without knowing it, that song became the benchmark of REM's music for me. I think the primary reason I'm so resistant to the early records is that they don't sound like Losing My Religion and that's what I want REM to sound like.

Monster is still a great record with a couple of hiccups. The second half is better than I remember.

Hi-Fi is still their best record, though.

So far, I'd say 8 of those 10 are really good albums but all of them have songs that could be excised. The bottom 3 all have high points but are wildly inconsistent and/or contain flat out bad songs.
